Julia Ward Howe died in 1910 at the age of 91. She was universally regarded as one of the most eminent women in America of her time. Whilst she won fame as a writer and a speaker she will always be remembered for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. She wrote this famous poem to encourage the soldiers of the North in fighting for freedom for slaves. | |
